Foodie Reads Challenge

Back in 2016 I jumped into a reading challenge hosted by Heather at Based On A True Story. I had so much fun, I've been signing on every year. If you're local to me (Monterey Peninsula, California), be sure to check out the newly-opened The Friends of the Marina Library bookstore.

Food. Books. What's not to love?

I hope you'll enjoy following along. I will post the titles I've read, on this page, as well as linking to the monthly lists at Based On A True Story. You should gain some great titles to add to your own shelf - or use as gifts for your favorite foodie bookworm. Heather has five Foodie Read Challenge Levels...
  • Short-Order Cook: 1 to 3 books
  • Pastry Chef: 4 to 8 books
  • Sous-Chef: 9 to 13 books
  • Chef de Cuisine: 14 to 18
  • Cordon Bleu Chef: More than 19
She also says that you can opt for an a la carte option and just read a book about food anytime you can fit it in. But I like the accountability and a year-long goal. Any genre of book qualifies for the challenge if food is a major part of the plot; it can even be a cookbook! This makes it easy for me to embrace the challenge level of Cordon Bleu Chef. In all the years I've participated, I have logged over 30 books; in 2019 it was nearly 50! I'm going to try for, at least, 40 again in 2022. My posts fizzled in the end of 2021 though I was reading...stay tuned for those books.

This year's links are below. You'll see my 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 links at this tab. I hope you'll be inspired to join the fun.

This month the French Winophiles group is looking at affordable wines from Burgundy.  Host Cindy of Grape Experiences wrote: "Burgundy, or Bourgogne, is known for its wines of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir... as well as Aligote, Gamay, Sauvignon, CĂ©sar, Pinot Beurot, Sacy, Melon in lesser quantities. Many of the well-known wines are quite expensive, but there are plenty of values to be found." Read her invitation here. And there won't be a Twitter chat for this event, so you will have to dive into the articles themselves to read about our pairings and findings. Here's the line-up... Quick Pickled Red Onions and Radishes

If you've been reading my blog for even a short amount of time, you probably know how much I love to pickle things. I was just telling a friend you can pickle - with vinegar - or you can ferment - with salt - for similar delicious effect. The latter has digestive benefits and I love to do that, but when I need that pop of sour flavor quickly, I whip up quick pickles that are ready in as little as a day or two. I've Pickled Blueberries , Pickled Asparagus , Pickled Cranberries , Pickled Pumpkin , and even Pickled Chard Stems ! This I did last night for an upcoming recipe challenge that requires I include radishes. Ummmm...of course I'm pickling them! Ingredients  makes 1 quart jar radishes, trimmed and sliced organic red onions, peeled and thinly sliced (I used a mandolin slicer) 3/4 C vinegar (I used white distilled vinegar) 3/4 C water 3 T organic granulated sugar 1 T salt (I used some grey sea salt) 6 to 8 grinds of black pepper Proce
